Rambling before Week 2...

NFL week one is in the books and it was quite a week for the BIGFFBL. With Chip Kelly calling plays in Philly, more multiple TD performances than I can remember in a long time and Peyton's Lucky 7 TD throws, it was bound to be a big fantasy scoring week for the BIG. And that it was. Week 1 of 2013 was the highest scoring week for the BIGFFBL ever. We averaged 119.8 per team, besting the 118.5 from Week 2 of 2011.

As for individual matchups, The Flying Hellfish started out running with Peyton's 60 pointer and finished up with the 2nd highest weekly score ever (183) and the 4th ever 100+ margin of victory in their 183-82 win over our defending champ Jonny. In other high scoring action, the Martians beat Air JC 154-137 for a combined score of 291, the 4th highest combined score ever. JC's 137 was 2 points shy of the highest losing score ever in the league also. Kinger took LRH by the slimmest of margins, being the first game ever to go to our relatively new 2nd tiebreaker. (Since neither of them put a 1st tiebreaker in, we then go to total touchdowns for all starters - Jack took that by a 5-4 margin). Nookie squeezed out a 3 point, down to the Monday night wire win over former MSP roommate Smith. The Sailors held off Bustin Nutz by 15 in another battle of two 100+ scoring teams and the LB's had no trouble with the Fantasy Superior as Jon's team rolled to a 39 point victory.

Local fans saw the Vikings lose to the Lions and the Rails lose to the Hawks, so not a good weekend for the home teams (never mind Jason...), although it was helpful to see the Packers lose as well.

The HBO show "Newsroom" came to mind when seeing the highlights from AP's Week 1 performance. The show is about the characters and situations surrounding a nightly news production (sort of like Bill O'Reilly, but much more left leaning...) In a couple episodes, a poem called "Gather Ye Rosebuds" is referenced, it goes...

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today,
Tomorrow will be dying.

Good advice to ponder (slight pun intended), but Vikings fans especially can apply this to AP's career. Enjoy it while we have him because his time is short in this league. Unfortunately, with Ponder as his QB, his chances at a deep playoff run (or really any playoff run) are slim to none.

All that being said, it's nice to have the fantasy season back in action. Fall is a great time of year, athough usually quite busy in the world of construction, but great for weather and scenery. Football season is always the ultimate sign that fall has arrived.

So as this Fall and fantasy football season have gotten going, I've been reminded of another "Newsroom" episode titled "The Greater Fool". The "Greater Fool" is a reference to an investment strategy (which I won't get into), but the description from the episode relates wonderfully with a fantasy football owner's perspective in week 2...

The greater fool is someone with the perfect blend of self-delusion and ego to think that he can succeed where others have failed. This whole country was made by greater fools.

I don't know about the whole country - but this league sure is. As week two approaches, good luck to all the BIGFFBL 'Greater Fools' as we all still look forward to having a shot at the 2013 Championship Trophy, no matter how self-delusional that may be.

Need I say more?
